The pair chose a name that refers to the
vaudeville performances by a group of young women from the US State of Georgia,
at the end of the nineteenth century. Of these ladies, who started to perform
from 1883 on, Lulu Hurst and Annie Abbott were the best known.
Lulu Hurst, who is
reputed to be the very first Georgia Wonder, surprised her audience with tricks
in which chairs, walking sticks and umbrellas played an important role. These
props, after treatment by Hurst, looked as if they had been bewitched by
magical powers. In any case, even very large male experimental subjects did not
succeed to keep the 'haunted' material under control.
