One Day as a Lion

Zack de la Rocha (Rage Against the Machine singer) and Jon Theodore (ex-drummer of Mars Volta) are the driving forces behind this project, revealing their presence by a sound characterized by drum rolls, keyboard effects and hip hop singing.

The source tapped to find a band name is said to be the Bible, but those who consult the Holy Scripture will see that in that case a paraphrase must have been applied at the least.

After all, Psalms 84 10:11 says ‘Better is one day in your courts than a thousand elsewhere’.

One Day as a Lion band name origins - Hip hop lion graffitiA slogan that came into vogue during and after the Battle of the Piave (June 1918, won by Italy and lost by Austria-Hungary) offers a more favourable position:

'E’ meglio vivere un giorno da leone che cent’anni da pecora’ ('Better live one day as a lion than a hundred years as a sheep').

But this muscular language did not inspire De la Rocha and Theodore either to choose One Day as a Lion as a band name.

The true inspiration was a picture that George Rodriguez made in 1970 during riots in an immigrant neighborhood in Los Angeles, Boyle Heights.

That photo shows a white wall on which the following boxed text can be read:

'It's better to live one day as a lion than a thousand years as a lamb.'
