Synth pop and new wave band from English
Basildon (Essex), initially going through life as Composition of Sound. That
sounded rather pompous, so a new name was found, which in turn was considered too haughty.
A glance at the cover of a French fashion magazine, Dépêche Mode,
solved the issue, even though the band members did not know what their new name
meant.
But in that respect they did not differ much from many of their countrymen, because on various internet forums people come up with translations as 'fast fashion' and 'latest fashion', while a dépêche is just a message (or a telegram). 'Fashion message' or 'Fashion telegram' is a better translation.
