Vince Clarke (keyboards) and Andy Bell (vocals) together form the synth pop band Erasure.
Nonsense stories ascribing the name to a pencil from which the gum had come off (assumed original band name: Pencil without an Eraser) or to the word Erasure written on a demo tape (after which that tape was erased of course) we sweep aside as fairy tales.
A more likely explanation is that the duo was inspired by the movie Eraserhead (1977) by David Lynch that later became a cult film.
This argument becomes even stronger by looking at the remarkable resemblance between Andy Bell and Eraserhead’s leading actor, Jack Nance (as Henry Spencer).
