Smashing Pumpkins - Has nothing to do with tennis

The alternative rock band The Smashing Pumpkins (sometimes The is omitted) comes from Chicago, Illinois.

The origin of the band name is somewhat shrouded in mystery.

There are the usual stories that mention a dream in which the name was passed on, and there is also a statement of the band in which it is said that it is just a joke.

‘The name of the band is a stupid name, a dumb bad joke and a bad idea, OK? Billy named the band before there even was a band. He was like, “I’m gonna have a band and it’s gonna be called this.”’

It is noteworthy that Wretzky stresses that 'Smashing' is not a verb but an adjective. Smashing Pumpkins should not be interpreted as 'breaking pumpkins by force', but as 'great pumpkins'.
