Musical trendsetters in a style that was later filed under gothic rock.

The London punks took their foreboding name from a poster that advertised a film from 1969 by Italian director Luchino Visconti. It concerned La caduta degli dei ('The fall of the gods'), a title that obviously was entirely unfit to serve as a band name. Fortunately the members of the band lived in England, where the film was released with the title The Damned.

A happy end after all.
