Band member and multi-instrumentalist Geoff Barrow did not grow up in that big city, he grew up about 13 km further to the West, in a town called Portishead (emphasis on head).
Portishead (population: over 22,000) was known among others because of the presence of a (now demolished) navy communications station that in its heyday provided work to well over a hundred sparks (radio operators).
The comms center was musically immortalized thanks to the number Portishead Radio by Mike Batt.
Active: 1991-1999; 2005-present, GBR
