Big Star - Good with food

Rock band from Memphis, Tennessee, started by Chris Bell, Jody Stephens, Andy Hummel and Alex Chilton.

The old codgers among us will recognise the latter as the lead singer of The Boxtops; in this capacity Chilton recorded the number one hit The Letter.

After an absence of almost twenty years Big Star was reborn with a few changes in the line-up.

Big Star name origin - SupermarktDuring breaks in between recording sessions in Memphis, the members of proto-Big Star would always go and get provisions – beer, chips and other refreshments – at a Big Star Market, easily recognisable by the gigantic five-pointed star attached to the front.

That gave them an idea for a band name.

The supermarket chain did not last as long as the band did, in 1982 the Big Star shops were acquired by the Grand Union group.

Big Star Markets still exist in the US, but they have nothing to do with the former shops of that name.

Active: 1971-1974; 1993-present, USA
