
Next to this a repertoire change appealed to the imagination: at a certain moment the band, when it was still called Earth, started to punctuate its numbers with occult and horror elements.
That was in 1969, at a moment that it became clear that another band was active bearing the name Earth.
The guiding light for a new group name was provided by a cinema facing Earth's rehearsal room; there the film Black Sabbath from 1963 was shown, starring Boris Karloff.
Many people were queuing up for a ticket. Bass player Geezer Butler remarked that he found it ‘strange that so many people want to spend money on a horror movie'.
That gave the band an idea.
