Black Sabbath

Black Sabbath name idea - Black-sabbath-film-posterEnglish rock band from Birmingham, partly owing its awareness to the quite colorful singer of the band, Ozzy Osbourne.

Next to this a repertoire change appealed to the imagination: at a certain moment the band, when it was still called Earth, started to punctuate its numbers with occult and horror elements.

That was in 1969, at a moment that it became clear that another band was active bearing the name Earth.

The guiding light for a new group name was provided by a cinema facing Earth's rehearsal room; there the film Black Sabbath from 1963 was shown, starring Boris Karloff.

Many people were queuing up for a ticket. Bass player Geezer Butler remarked that he found it ‘strange that so many people want to spend money on a horror movie'.

That gave the band an idea.
