Durutti Column - Anarchy in the UK

Durutti Column name inspiration - Buenaventura DurrutiManchester is the home base of The Durutti Column, a musical project of guitarist (and occasional pianist) Vini Reilly. The music that Reilly - usually assisted by drummer Bruce Mitchell - performs falls into the category post punk.

The Durruti Column is the most famous unit of anarchist fighters that took part in the Spanish civil war. The column was led by Buenaventura Durruti from the summer of 1936 until his death on 20 november of the same year. An important merit of the column was that it stood its ground defending Spanish capital Madrid against the Phalangist revolutionaries.

The band name Durutti Column is written differently though: with only one 'r' and twice a 't'. That provides ammunition for the assumption that not Buenaventura Durruti was the name giver of the band, but a 1966 comic entitled Le Retour de la Colonne Durutti.
