The music the New York folk rock band The Lovin' Spoonful made was occasionally described by former frontman John Sebastian as 'a combination of Mississippi John Hurt and Chuck Berry'.Most music lovers will know who the latter is. And regarding John Hurt: it was not without reason that Sebastian mentioned him, because the band name seems to come directly from his song Coffee Blues:
‘Good mornin’ baby/How you do this mornin’?/Well please ma’am just a lovin’ spoon/Just a lovin’ spoonful/I declare I got to have my lovin’ spoonful.’
Lovin' spoonful in this case means that last drop of coffee that goes in as an extra sweet sip.
There is a complication however: we are told that a lovin' spoonful also is slang for the average amount of semen a healthy guy produces. Now we only need to figure out if this would be a teaspoon, dessertspoon, soup spoon or ladle … Luckily 10CC gives a clue.
