Salt-N-Pepa - Self-fulfilling prophecy

Salt-N-Pepa name idea - Musical salt-and-pepper-setTasty female hip hop trio from Queens, New York, consisting of Cheryl 'Salt' James, Sandra 'Pepa' Denton and Dee Dee 'Davison' Roper (a.k.a. DJ Spinderella). Things started moving after the trio had brought out the song The Showstopper. That was a so-called answer song: a song passed over by another song (for example Oh Carol! by Neil Sedaka and Oh Neil by Carole King). With The Showstopper Salt-N-Pepa reacted to The Show by rapper duo Doug E. Fresh and Slick Rick.

The first success of The Showstopper (highest ranking: number 46 on the US R&B chart) surprised the three rapping women, at that time called Supernature, and they decided to change their name to Salt-N-Pepa (alternative spellings: Salt 'N' Pepa and Salt N Pepa), inspired by the text of their own song The Showstopper:

‘Right now I'm gonna show you how it's supposed to be / Cuz we, the Salt and Pepa MCs / Will chance the circumstance rocks your pants / My fans, this is called the jam.'
