Once Steppenwolf performed by the rather tame name The Sparrows, but record producer Gabriel Mekler (1942-1977) got the band's alpha male, John Kay, interested in the idea to name the band Steppenwolf, after the novel by German/Swiss writer and poet Herman Hesse.
