The Sugarhill Gang has every right to be mentioned in any self-respecting modern music encyclopedia, because this was the first hip hop act that made it into the American top 40 (with the hit Rapper's Delight).The record company of the three members, Sugarhill Records, is named after the New York district in Manhattan and the Gang, originating from Englewood (New Jersey), basically did that also.
