Clannad - Family matters

Singing in several languages (English, Latin, Gàidhlig - say Scottish - and Mohican, but especially in their mother tongue Irish) the Irish group Clannad from the district of Gaoth Dobhair (English: Gweedore) has been busy creating a distinct profile for itself since many a decade already.

The music the band makes can be described as folk and everything somehow related to it, from Celtic rock to New Age.

What Clannad means - wexford-clan-history-trailAs far as we have been able to check the word clannad itself means nothing, at least not in Irish.

That is because it is a contraction of the words Clann as Dobhair (the Gweedore family).

At least that is how singer Enya (born as Eithne Patricia Ní Bhraonáin), who was a Clannad member for a short while, explains it on her official website.
