
Note the spelling: with an 'a' (megadeath) the name would have referred to a million deaths, for example by introducing an atomic bomb or a Megadeth concert to a major city.
The term was coined by Herman Kahn, who used it for the first time in his doom book On Thermonuclear War.
There is a small chance that members of Megadeth have scrounged the name from Sigma 6, an English band that took on different names all the time (in the end they became Pink Floyd), one of which was The Megadeaths.
