Baverstock was Artist & Repertoire Manager of the English branch of Dutch record company Philips. Jack was willing to offer the group The 'N Betweens - later glam rock band Slade - a contract at sublabel Fontana, provided that the group moved from the West Midlands to London and that it adopted a different name.
It so happened that Jack's secretary was in the habit of giving her personal belongings proper names. Her shoes for example (or hair powder box – opinions differ in that respect) were called Slade and she addressed her handbag as Ambrose. Jack Baverstock insisted that the name 'N Betweens was changed to Ambrose Slade; the group reluctantly agreed.
Later the first name was cut off by their new manager, former Animals bassist Charles 'Chas' Chandler - to the band's great relief.
Active: 1969-1992; 1993-present, GBR
