Soulfly name inspiration - in memoriamAlthough housed in Phoenix, Arizona, Soulfly is partly rooted in Brazil, in Belo Horizonte to be exact. This is because one of the members of this death metal band, Massimiliano ('Max') Cavalera, comes from the Brazilian band Sepultura.

The songs Cavalera writes are largely inspired by a dramatic event that continues to control his life: the premature death of his stepson Dana Wells. A song by the Deftones, entitled Headup (a composition co-authored by Max) also refers to Wells' death.

The chorus of that song earned the band its name: 'Soulfly/Fly high/Soulfly/Fly free'.

Active: 1997-present, USA
