The Spear of Destiny is what is commonly referred to as the Holy Lance. This is the stabbing weapon with which a Roman soldier - the centurion Longinus – pierced the side of Jesus hanging on the cross. This bloody event is described quite matter-of-factly by evangelist John (John 19: 34-'Instead, one of the soldiers pierced Jesus' side with a spear, bringing a sudden flow of blood and water.').
That the lance had been preserved for posterity was not mentioned until 570 by St. Anthony of Piacenza. He had been allowed to see the relic in the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem. And as happens so often: there are now several places on the globe that claim to have or have had the lance in their possession. These are Rome, Paris (where it disappeared during the French Revolution), Armenian Ejmiatsin (now Vagharshapat), Krakow (Poland) and Vienna (Austria).
