Perhaps because of the rather long line-up the band was first called Big Thing, but when a record deal could be landed at CBS and - very unusual for a debut - a double LP was instantly put on the conveyor belt, it became the Chicago Transit Authority (CTA), the official name of Chicago's public transport company.
Apparently unfamiliar with the concept of free publicity the Authority summoned the band to choose a different name; so the name was cut back to Chicago.
