The band name of these alternative rockers from Ballynanty, Ireland, ripened gradually. Originally the name was The Cranberry Saw Us, an auditive joke that works best if the name is pronounced quickly: you then hear cranberry sauce.
Was it a reference to the fade out of Beatles song Strawberry Fields Forever, in which the delayed voice of John Lennon spoke those two words? Who knows.
Fact is that later the name was shortened to The Cranberry.
And then, when a demo tape was sent to the band addressed to The Cranberries, the final name was a fact.
