A forerunner of The Cult (genres: hard rock, post punk and gothic punk) was called The Southern Death Cult (the original term for an American cultural movement now known as Southeastern Ceremonial Complex).

Re-established the band was for a short while called The Death Cult, but then all of a sudden there was success and television performances were scheduled so the band members decided to be a bit less shocking.

That is how it became The Cult.
