The brain behind the George Baker Selection from the Dutch Zaanstreek was singer/songwriter Johannes (Hans) Bouwens (born 1944). The George Baker Selection's claim to international success was in particular due to the hits Little Green Bag and Una Paloma Blanca.
Bouwens reconstructed how he came to the band name in an interview with music journalist Peter van Brummelen:
'That name? I got it from a detective book. In the bandbus there used to be nudie magazines on one side and on the other side detectives. When we were briging out our first single Little Green Bag I needed a stage name. Bingo, I thought when I saw a book about detective George Baker in the bus.'
The question is to what extent Baker's memories are correct. Anne Marinus, co-author of the standard work 'A hundred years of Dutch pulp magazines' could not find much more clues in his archives than the pulp publication Fatal Quiz by Samm Sinclair Baker.
