Moby Grape - And the winner is ...

Blessed with band members that - at least in the original line-up – could all sing, play and compose Moby Grape had a promising launch. Thanks to this versatility the music was not monotonous: it was a mixture of country rock, folk, rock 'n' roll and psychedelic rock.

Guitarist Peter Lewis once revealed how the name Moby Grape came about. At the time that a name for the group had to be found, bassist Bob Moseley and guitarist Skip Pence had a brainstorming session, resulting in the punchline of a silly joke:

Moby Grape name idea - Herman Melville - Moby-Dick - The_voyage_of_the_Pequod‘Q: What's purple and floats in the sea?' - A: ‘Moby Grape!'

As a reminder for our esteemed readers: Moby is the name of the white whale that shakes off its pursuers in Herman Melville's novel Moby-Dick (note the dash).

For a similar explanation, but then relating to a different band name: see Electric Prunes.
