Heavens to Murgatroid

The Portsmouth, New Hampshire-based power pop band Heavens to Murgatroid was founded by singer/guitarist Rick Twombly and bassist Tim McCoy.

What band nname Heavens to Murgatroid means - Hannah Barbera - SnagglepussThe apparently visually inclined McCoy (the band's first album was simply called '!') is crazy about cartoons. 'Heavens to Murgatroyd' (with a y, although you don't hear that of course) is a favorite line of Snagglepuss, a character created by the successful American cartoonists Bill Hanna and Joe Barbera. Snagglepuss, created in 1959 by this drawing duo, played a role in cartoon series The Yogi Bear Show.

It is a pink, anthropomorphic (or human-like) mountain lion whose texts were recorded by Daws Butler, a man whose voice we know also from the Hanna-Barbera characters Huckleberry Hound and Yogi Bear.

In any case Murgatroyd is not taken from Miss Murgatroid (in reality Alicia J. Rose), an accordionist who in the 90's managed to fill three albums with squeezebox music.

Snagglepuss' filler does not refer to a number of Acumen Nation (track 6 of the album Lord of the Cynics) either, because that was released in 2003. And as a matter of fact neither are Hanna and Barbera the spiritual fathers of the expression. It comes from the movie Meet The People (1944), where it is used by Bert Lahr in the role of The Commander.

Heavens to Murgatroid is a variant of a much older expression: 'Heavens to Betty'. No one seems to know however who Betty is or was, let alone that anything is known about the identity of Murgatroyd.
