Drummer Daniel Davison once explained that the band name is a reference to actress Marilyn Monroe (born Norma Jeane Mortenson, baptized Norma Jean Baker and later - after her marriage - also known as Norma Jean Dougherty and Norma Jeane DiMaggio).
According to Davison, the band members later found out that 'Norma' means something like 'pattern' and 'Jean' is equal to 'God's mercy and grace', in other words Patterns of God's mercy and grace. Convenient for a Christian band!
