Adopting the viewpoint of the group's own website, the long band name comes from a prayer the Maya addressed to their god of the grain. The presumed prayer goes like this:
'Sever for us all ties
Between the now and what is to be
We will act as your sword, oh Great Itzamna
And you will know us by the trail of dead'
Sounds pretty convincing, doesn't it? If it were not for the band later calling this declaration a lie for entertainment.
Then again, it appears that the Great Itzamna actually is being worshipped, so perhaps some of it is true after all. Is there no end to to our quest then?
