How Marillion got its band name - The Silmarillion - JRR Tolkien - 1977 First Edition CoverThe progressive rockers from Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire began their lives as professional musicians in 1979 with a slightly longer name: Silmarillion, based on the novel by J.R.R. Tolkien.

In 1981, when copyright problems were far from imaginary, the name was shortened to Marillion.
