The progressive rockers from Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire began their lives as professional musicians in 1979 with a slightly longer name: Silmarillion, based on the novel by J.R.R. Tolkien.In 1981, when copyright problems were far from imaginary, the name was shortened to Marillion.
