Martha & the Vandellas

Soul singers who previously operated under the names The Del-Phis and The Vels; later it became Martha and the Vandellas and later still the surname of Martha was added: Martha Reeves and the Vandellas.

How Martha & The Vandella's got the band name - Detroit postcardThe name Vandellas was figured out by Martha and on one hand is a tribute to Della Reese (born 1931), ardently admired by Reeves, on the other hand it is a reference to the fact that Reeves at the time lived in Detroit, in Van Dyke Street.
