
According to some sources the band owes the name Screaming Trees to the Ents that occur in J.R.R. Tolkiens The Lord of the Rings. It concerns an ambulant tree species the perhaps best known representative of which is Treebeard, the patriarch of the Ents.
But a rumour is also spreading that traces the name of the band back to an effects pedal for guitars: a so-called treble booster from the Electro-Harmonix company called the Screaming Tree.

I heard back in the 90s, that it was due to the fact that all members are well over 6'6" in height.
