
The band name is pro lingo: machine heads are the mechanical tuning devices built into the end of the neck of a stringed instrument. Seriously stringed musicians don't go anywhere without their heads.

"Machine Head" is also the name of Deep Purple's 6th studio album. Released in 1972, it predates Robb Flynn's band by close to 2 decades.
