Showbread - Food offering instructions

Showbread is a Christian band from Guyton, Georgia. Christian or not: they seriously rock. And neither do they waver over serving up some screamo, hardcore or metalcore.

But their taste in band naming is somewhat more conservative - or should we say: more orthodox? Former guitarist Matt Davis once said this about it: 'The band's name comes from a biblical reference that Jesus used to show how Christianity isn't so much about rules, but about love.'

What band name Showbread means - Tabernacle - Mishkan - Table with ShewbreadThat's all fine, but the reader of course wants to know whether or not the name Showbread is just a randomly chosen word. Well, it's not.

In Jewish communities showbread or shewbread is well known. It concerns the twelve loaves of bread sacrificed by the priest on Sabbath and laid out on a special table inside the tabernacle.

Leviticus 24: 5-9 (New International Version of the Bible) issues the following instructions:

'Take the finest flour and bake twelve loaves of bread, using two-tenths of an ephah[a] for each loaf. Arrange them in two stacks, six in each stack, on the table of pure gold before the Lord. By each stack put some pure incense as a memorial portion to represent the bread and to be a food offering presented to the Lord.

This bread is to be set out before the Lord regularly, Sabbath after Sabbath, on behalf of the Israelites, as a lasting covenant. It belongs to Aaron and his sons, who are to eat it in the sanctuary area, because it is a most holy part of their perpetual share of the food offerings presented to the Lord.'

Active: 1997-present, USA
