Once these pioneers of alternative rock music started as Dogbreath, a name that kept the audience at some distance.
Repeated misconduct on stage made it increasingly difficult for the group from Minneapolis, Minnesota to book gigs, so a name change was required. They became The Replacements (say 'the Dogbreath substitutes') and then it started going again.
It is questionable whether the audience understood the message however: the band was nicknamed The Placemats, often abbreviated to The Mats.
When the primal members Chris Mars and Bob Stinson were removed from the band because of default, they are said to have considered to continue as The Replaced.
