Black Star

Together New York MC's Mos Def (real name Dante Terrell Smith) and Talib Kweli (full name Talib Kweli Greene) form the alternative hip hop duo Black Star.

The name Black Star points at Mos and Talib's roots: at the beginning of the twentieth century a shipping company by that name was active, as a kind of ideological counterpart of the celebrated White Star Line.

How Black Star got their band name - SS Yarmouth - Black Star LineThe Black Star Line was set up by Marcus Garvey of the Universal Negro Improvement Association (UNIA).

Garvey's enterprise was not only intended for the transportation of people and goods from one place to the other: the idea was to actively involve the company in the repatriation of Afro-Americans. In other words, the ships of the Black Star Line were to bring their black passengers from America back to Africa.

It was no success, because the Black Star Line and its successor, the Black Cross Navigation and Trading Company, sailed for only three years. After losses had accrued to more than 1 million dollars Garvey and the UNIA abandoned the shipping company.

Active: 1997-present, USA
