Great Big Sea - Dip into history

Celtic rockers from St. John 's, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada.

Great Big Sea band name explanation - Conception Bay, Newfoundland - johnisaacblogspot.blogspot.comGreat Big Sea acquired fame in particular as a folk rock band that makes modern arrangements of old folk songs from Newfoundland, including shanties tracing back on the five hundred year old history of the island and its Irish, English and French influences.

The band takes its name from an old Newfoundland song, A great big sea hove in Long Beach, which amounts to a heavy (sea) swell in Long Beach.

The title of the song is every now and then corrupted to A Great Big Sea Cove, but that's groundless.
