Mumiy Troll

One of Russia's most important rock bands partly relies on Brit pop. But the band from Vladivostok and Moscow crossed other borders as well - for example when a band name had to be chosen.

What inspired band name Mumiy Troll - finland-moomin-picking-flowersThe fact is that Mumiy Troll is a russification of the word Moomintroll, the name of a very popular cartoon character in Finland and Sweden, created by the Finnish author Tove Jansson.

The Moomins experienced their very first adventure in 1945 already. The hippo-like trolls are truly adventurous and live in the peaceful Moomin valley, a paradise with mountains, forests and islands.

The valley is inhabited by main character Moomin, lovingly raised by Mammamoomin and Pappamoomin. His friends are Sniff the Kangaroo, Snufkin and Little My.

The experiences of the Moomins have been made into a film several times, among others a Japanese cartoon from 1990.

A musical tidbit: Pierre Kartner, also known as Father Abraham and author of the Smurfs Song that reached the number 1 position in 16 countries, wrote the music for the opening and the closing tune, as well as the music for the movie Comet in Moominland.
